The Royal Sovereign Hotel

GV II

Terraced house, now a public house. Early C19 with
single-storey addition to south of late C19. Stucco, roof of
slate.
3 storeys over basement, 3-window range, the original building
double-fronted. Flat-arched entrance between Doric pilasters,
with modillion cornice now mutilated. Full-height segmental
bays either side of entrance, with tripartite windows; one
central window to each floor, that to the first floor blind;
cornice and blocking course. Single-storey wing to south has
stepped, round-arched, 3-bay arcade to Preston Street and to
front part in Regent Mews, formed from panelled pilasters
carrying archivolts connected by a springing band, the
spandrels filled with scrolling ornament; entrance in
right-hand bay; fascia on console brackets with triglyph at
either end, cornice; parapet with central curved pediment
flanked by scrolled consoles; the springing band continues in
Regent Mews linking 2 round-arched windows to the east. Sashes
of original design to front and rear elevations of early C19
building.
