Includes: No.25A CLARENDON SQUARE.
Terrace of 6 houses, now houses and flats, and attached
railings. c1828-1832 with later additions and alterations.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facade and Welsh slate
roof with cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys with basements, Nos 27 and 30 with attics,
14 first-floor windows arranged 3:3:2:2:2:2. Rustication to
ground floor and basement.
House to left (No.25) has Doric pilasters through first and
second floors, frieze.
First floor: mainly 8-pane French windows with margin-lights,
except No.27 has 4/4 sashes with margin-lights. Mainly within
tooled architraves except to Nos 27 (partly remaining) and 28.
Second floor: 3/6 sashes with sills, all except to No.28 with
tooled architraves. Continuous cornice and frieze with further
deep cornice to right 4 houses.
Third floor has 2/2, 3/3 and 3/6 sashes, in tooled architraves
except to No.28. Cornice. Blocking course to right 4 houses.
Ground floor: steps to side entrances, panelled doors, some
part-glazed, with overlights; all within distyle Roman Doric
porches with engaged plain pilasters, frieze mainly with
triglyphs, many with modillion cornices. 6/6 sashes in plain
reveals and with sills, Nos 25 and 26 have flat rusticated
arches with raised keystone.
Basements: part-glazed doors, mainly 8/8 and 3/6 sashes. Roof
dormers to Nos 27, 29 and 30. End stacks.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area lancet railings and to sides of
steps throughout.
HISTORICAL NOTE: a complete square of stucco terraces,
Clarendon Square was laid out c1828 to the plans of PF
Robinson, architect, of Brook Street, Mayfair. The houses were
completed c1832, the gardens in the Square were planted with
trees in May 1830.
