Two houses and attached railings. c1828, with later
alterations. Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades
and Welsh slate roof with cast-iron railings and balconies.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with attics and basements, 4 first-floor
windows. First floor: tall 6/9 sashes. Second floor: 3/6
sashes with sills. Attics: roof dormer to left has casement
window. Basement has 8/8 sashes. Ground floor: 6/6 sashes with
sills. All windows in plain reveals.
Entrances to left and right returns.
To left, (No.48 Grove Street): 5 steps to central entrance a
6-fielded-panel door with overlight within fielded-pilastered
surround with hood on corbels. Left return has outer blind
openings in plain reveals and with sills, 2 per floor.
Right return (No.6 Regent Street): 3 storeys, 2 first-floor
openings. First floor: tall 6/9 sash and blind opening. Second
floor: blind openings. Ground floor: to left a 6/6 sash. All
windows in plain reveals and with sills.
Entrance: steps to panelled door within projecting porch with
Tuscan pilasters, frieze and copings, round-arched
single-lights to sides of porch. Hipped roof. Central stack
with cornice.
Main facade, first floor, each house has continuous balcony
with double-heart-and-anthemion motif balustrade, also to
first floor, left window of right return.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings to front and returns with
gate to basement have alternate anthemion and sword-hilt
finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Grove Street was laid out in 1828, the west
side and lower part of the east side were built by 1834.
Forms an architectural group with No.50, Grove Street (qv).
