Brighton and Preston Cemetery:
entrance lodge and attached walls

GV II

Entrance lodge. Dated 1885 on chimneystack. Render with
terracotta dressings, roof of tiles.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys over basement; the house is designed in
the Old English style, with gabled wings of one-window range
facing south and east, the porch in the angle between the 2,
and another gabled wing under a catslide roof running north.
Single-storey porch under a hipped roof with Tudor-arched
doorcase of terracotta having a fanlight and sidelights;
terracotta quoins, which stand proud of the render, to angles
and window-dressings.
The wing facing south has a canted bay to 2 storeys, the
windows of which are flat-arched to the ground floor but with
cusped mouldings to the first, the gable carried out over the
bay with brackets to the sides on terracotta corbels,
timberwork to the face of the gable and moulded barge-boards.
The wing facing east has tripartite windows to the ground and
first floor, the heads detailed as for the south wing, a
bressumer carried on a corbel table, timberwork to the face of
the gable and moulded barge-boards. Elaborately moulded
multiple stack in roof running north.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Dwarf walls and railings matching those in Hartington Road
connect the lodge to the entrance gates (qv)
