Building society premises. 1933. By John Leopold Denman for
the Citizens Permanent Building Society. Red brick laid in
stretcher bond with Portland stone dressings, roof of
pantiles.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic, 5-window range and symmetrical.
Entrances in the outer bays, with 3 round-arched windows
between, the whole front faced in stone up to the springing.
The flat-arched entrances are in shallow porches with canted
sides, panelled architrave, mould springing band, ribbed
blocking course and a keystone decorated with the emblem of
the building society. The windows are set in a
concave-chamfered architrave of stone decorated at the
springing and above with panels showing the building trades,
carved in relief by Joseph Cribb; original metal glazing bars
in the form of a central window brought forward as a small
canted bay with sidelights and radiating glazing bars above.
Deeper windows, probably to a staircase, in the outer bays of
first floor, with architraves and pediment on consoles,the
glazing in the form of a recessed canted bay with concave
sides; 3 inner windows simple flat-arched sashes with frames
brought out almost flush with the wall; the second-floor
windows are of the same type with a sill band of recessed
upright brickwork and plan panels of projecting brickwork
between; original rainwater goods; clock in an ornate and
bracketed wooden case centrally over first floor windows;
stone cornice; brick parapet with stone coping swept up at
ends to fluted urns; 3 hipped dormers in mansard roof; side
and ridge stacks.
