Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3104SW MEETING HOUSE LANE
577-1/64/515 (South East side)
20/08/71 Nos.49, 50 AND 50A
(Formerly Listed as:
MEETING HOUSE LANE
Nos.41-53 (Consecutive))

GV II

Houses, now shops. Late C18 or early C19; shop fronts of early
to mid C19 design. Stucco on north elevation scored to imitate
ashlaring; the same treatment applied to the other elevation
has been partly obscured by the application of rough cast. It
is impossible to see the roof due to the extreme narrowness of
Meeting House Lane.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement. One window to each and one
window-range to west-facing return of No.50. All windows are
flat arched. Ground floor of No.49 taken up by a shop front
which resembles those on Nos 47 and 48 Meeting House Lane (qv)
and dates to the mid C19. The first-floor window has 6 x 6
sashes of original design, the second-floor 3 x 6; the
third-floor window cannot be clearly seen. On party wall is a
flat-arched entrance to upper floors of No.50, with the postal
address 50A. The entrance to the shop front on No.50 is on the
corner, set on a chamfer and flanked by a pair of Tuscan
pilasters; entablature continuous around the shop. This front
is extraordinarily tall, almost double height; the glazing
bars in the top section are original. There are mid C19 sashes
to first-floor windows of 2 x 2 design; the second-floor
windows have an original early C19 design of 6 x 6. All
windows have deep reveals and projecting sills. Guttered eaves
to both. The great height of the shop front to No.50 may
indicate that it was built as a jeweller's shop.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
These buildings form a most important group with Nos 1-12,
22-32, 36-41, 43-48, and 51-53 Meeting House Lane (qv), which
is the centre of the section of the Old Town known as the
Lanes.
