GV II

Institute, now 4 dwellings. c1850 with late C20 alterations.
For Robert Needham Philips. Brick with ashlar dressings;
fishscale tile roof with brick cross-axial stacks with
diagonal shafts. Irregular plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 4-window range. Gabled wing projects to
left of centre, with left end breaking back from it. Wide
eaves and gables with enriched bargeboards with finials; roof
has terracotta cresting. Porch to right of gable with coped
parapet has entrance with 4-centred head and plank door with
strap hinges.
Segmental-headed windows have chamfered openings and
labelmoulds; ground floor has 2 windows with 3-light transomed
casements, and one to left end with cross-casement; first
floor has cross-casement to gable with slit above, small light
over entrance and single light in gabled half-dormer to right;
some casements renewed.
Gabled roofs. Truncated cross-axial stack, and cross-axial
stack to rear wing retaining caps.
Left return has gable to right end with canted bay window with
hipped roof over 1:2:1-light transomed casements,
cross-casement to first floor has small inserted window to
right; recessed gabled bay to left has altered window and
entrance with panelled door, single light above.
Single-storey wing projects to left, with ashlar 1:3:1-light
hollow-chamfered mullioned casements to canted bay to end with
hipped roof and C20 casement above; inner return has large
porch with Tudor-arched former entrance, now window, and C20
entrance to left.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
The Institute originally had a reading room, refreshment bar,
billiard room and living accommodation.
