PRESTON ON STOUR

SP2050 The Cottage

GV II

House. C17 with c1860 front range. Timber-frame on coursed
limestone rubble, and brick; tile roofs with brick stacks.
Gable facing, front to right; L-plan.
EXTERIOR: C19 front range of 2 storeys; symmetrical 3-window
range. Chamfered brick plinth, and top cornice with central
gablet. Round-headed entrance has doorcase with fluted
pilaster strips and consoles, but later gabled timber porch;
fanlight over 4-flush-panel door. Windows have sills, and
rubbed brick flat arches over 12-pane horned sashes to ground
floor, similar 9-pane sashes to 1st floor. Cross-axial stack
and rear lateral stack. Similar windows to returns, the left
return with range of single-storey service buildings.
Right return to street has rear range with close-studded
framing on high rubble plinth; 2 canted bay windows have high
brick plinths, and 1:3:1-light small-paned casements, 2 small
leaded lights between; 1st floor has windows with 3-light
small-paned casements; all with iron opening casements. Large
cross-axial stack has fillets and C19 cornice with 4 pots.
INTERIOR: noted as having central staircase to front range,
back-to-back fireplaces to rear wing.
