BARNSTAPLE

SS5533SE HIGH STREET
684-1/7/171 (West side)
21/08/85 Clarence Hotel

GV II

Public house. Mid C19; probably a remodelling of a much
earlier building. Solid rendered front. Slated roof. Rendered
chimney behind ridge, to right. 2 storeys. 3-window range.
Ground storey has wide cart-entrance to left with bracketed
cornice; panelled double doors, each leaf with 3 short panels
below and 3 tall ones above. Bar door to right has bracketed
cornice almost as long; door appears to have been narrowed. In
centre a 3-light mullioned-and-transomed wood window, probably
C20. Upper-storey windows have plain sashes in moulded
architraves. Deep boxed eaves cornice on paired brackets, the
latter rising from a stepped architrave. INTERIOR not
inspected.
