House, later school, now restaurant. c1826. For Charles Cooke
Higgs; later additions and alterations include C20 ballroom to
rear; conversion to restaurant c1994. Stucco over brick with
concealed hipped slate roof.
PLAN: 2 storeys, 4-window main range with 2-lower-storey,
3-window service wing to left.
EXTERIOR: main range: full-height Ionic pilasters to ends and
to either side of entrance bay; frieze, architrave, dentil
cornice and blocking course. Off-centre right entrance a Roman
Doric distyle porch with frieze, architrave and pediment,
double part-glazed and panelled doors in tooled surround. 6/6
sashes in plain reveals with tooled architraves and sills
throughout, those to ground floor have cornices on consoles.
Service wing: 6/6 sashes in plain reveals and with sills;
frieze, cornice and blocking course. Right return has similar
architraves to main range, blind window and glazed doors to
ground floor and 6/6 sashes to first floor.
INTERIOR: entrance hall has inner entrance with pilasters with
anthemion capitals, embellished cornice and frieze with
corbels and fleurons. Wide open-well staircase with ornate
iron balusters. Embellished cornices to ground floor rooms,
more simply moulded cornices to first floor. Shutters to most
windows. 3 Regency marble fireplaces, 1 to ground floor, 2 to
first floor.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Charles Cooke Higgs was patron of the Church
of the Holy Apostles (qv).
