2 terraced houses and attached railings. c1831-2. Architect
probably John Forbes or WA Watson. Stucco over brick with
concealed roof and tall stuccoed party-wall stacks. Gothic
EXTERIOR: Winchcombe Street facade: 2 storeys and basement,
2+5 first-floor windows, with 2-storey porch to right.
2-window range at left breaks forwards. Stucco details include
hoodmoulds with labelstops to most windows, moulded crowning
cornice and battlements. Windows mainly have 6/6 sashes with
pointed panes to square heads; one 2/2 horizontal-pane sash;
French windows above door at left. Entrance to left
breakforward a 4-panel part-glazed door; entrance to right a
panelled door. Right return has 2 windows per floor: 6/6 and
1/1 sashes with hoodmoulds with labelstops.
Clarence Road facade: 2 storeys on basement, 1:4:1 first-floor
windows, that to left in recessed 2-lower-storey entrance bay,
that to right recessed. Mainly 6/6 sashes with hoodmoulds, one
blind window to first floor at left. Crowning cornice and
crenellations. Entrance to right in solid crenellated porch a
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: arrowhead dividing railings.
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout
being designed by architect John Forbes. A good example of
Classical articulation given Regency Gothic features.
Forms a group with Nos 2-7 Clarence Road (qv).
