Formerly known as: Roman east gateway EASTGATE.
Remains of the north tower of the Roman east gate. C1 and C2,
extended and altered C3. Excavated and restored 1964. Ashlar
and dressed stone facings to a rubble core. Semicircular
eastern addition to rectangular wall turret. Doorway to south,
flight of steps in north-west corner. C20 posts marking the
position of the posts of the C1 legionary fortress gate.
Approx. 15m long and 10m wide, 2m high. This building is an
important part of the defences of the legionary fortress and
the Colonia.
