Former Congregational church, now offices. 1840. By James
Fenton of Chelmsford. Grey brick with stone dressings and
hipped and gabled slate roofs with iron finials and single
gable stack. Early English details.
Stepped string course, machicolated eaves, shouldered coped
south gable, clasping pilasters and buttresses. 2 storeys, 3
bays. Pointed arched windows with glazing bars.
South front has a slightly projecting centre with shallow
gabled buttresses and a loggia, 3 bays, with moulded arches,
round piers and foliage capitals. Beneath it, 3 windows and in
each end, a pointed arched doorway. Beyond, on either side, a
window. Above, 3 large windows with intersecting tracery and a
trefoil light above, flanked by single smaller windows.
East and west sides have to south a hipped projection with a
single window above. East side has buttresses and to left, a
chamfered pointed doorway with hoodmould. Above it, a window.
To right, 4 bays, each with 2 windows on each floor.
INTERIOR, refitted late C20, has a C19 dogleg stair with
turned newels.
