Former oil mill, attached gatehouse and grain store, now an
engineering works. Dated 1863, and late C19, with C20
alterations. Gault brick, with brick and stone dressings and
slate roof. Baroque Revival style.
EXTERIOR: channelled rusticated ground floor, eaves cornices,
coped parapets, pedimented gables. Windows are iron glazing
bar casements, those to the ground floor round headed, the
remainder segment headed.
Oil mill, 4 storeys, 5 bays, has a recessed centre rising
above the remainder, flanked by 2-bay wings, all defined by
pilasters. Central segment headed archway with quadrant jambs
and spandrel panels inscribed "Doughty's Oil Mill". Above, a
corniced projection with a datestone, 1863. Above again, a
narrow vertical recess with a window on each floor.
Flanking the archway, 2 windows to the right, and a pair of
panelled doors with fanlight and a window to the left. Above,
on either side, 2 windows on each floor.
Gatehouse, to the left, has a pedimented centre with angle
pilasters and a panelled parapet. In the centre, a pair of
double doors. Above and in front, cutting through the
pediment, a corrugated iron hoist enclosure, mid C20.
Grain store, to left again, 6 storeys, 3 bays, has rusticated
pilasters, deep cornices to the 2 topmost floors, and a higher
pedimented gable with scroll brackets. Ground floor has 3
windows. Above, a full height central recess with round head
and multiple keystones. On 3 floors, hoist doors, and above
them, a round opening with multiple keystones. Above again, an
altered window. To the right, a single window on each floor.
To the left, the windows are blocked, and a full-height grain
elevator is attached.
