Bank. 1876 Designed by Lockwood and Mawson of Bradford in a
late Gothic style. Ashlar front, Gault brick with ashlar
dressings to side. Slate roof.
EXTERIOR: front of 3 storeys has full height canted end, with
moulded plinth, double string courses to each floor, cornice
with carved florets, parapet with pierced quatrefoils
containing shields.
To the right a panelled entrance door with overlight with
carved stone glazing bars in ogee pattern, set in slightly
advanced bay with shouldered arch.
To left 2 plain sashes with shaped shouldered heads and narrow
colonnettes. Above 3 stone hoods on carved brackets beneath
panels with 3 pierced quatrefoils. To 1st and 2nd floor are 3
cross-mullioned windows to each side of bay. To the left a
further bay set back, with single similar windows to side and
front, to each floor.
Return has 2 gables, with mullioned windows and 2-storey
canted bay windows. In the gables a shield in a quatrefoil in
a recessed panel.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORY: formerly the Stamford and Spalding Banking Co
premises, founded in Stamford in early 1830s and first Boston
branch in 1835.
