03-SEP-01 16

II

House. c.1840 with minor C20 alterations. Stucco, with hipped slate roof and small paired brackets to eaves. 3 storeys and basement demarcated by band courses. Front to Winchester Road has single bay of sashes, the ground floor with very shallow projection. Side to North Parade is double-fronted with blind windows flanking central door and upper sashes. All sashes have original narrow glazing bars, the ground and first floor windows all with 12 panes, the second-floor windows shorter with 9 panes. Flush-panelled door with narrow overlight of small panes; wooden doorcase with fluted frieze. Altered basement access to Winchester Road. Rear bay, to east, has sashes with rendered voussoir arches, narrow C20 2-storey extension with flat roof, and late C20 conservatory.
Original interior fittings include: full-height staircase with matchstick balusters, column newels and simple moulded handrail, rising behind blind windows of rear bay; ground-floor fireplaces with reeded wooden surrounds and paterae; panelled shutters and boxing to ground-floor front; built-in cupboard to ground-floor rear, and narrow 2nd-floor fireplaces. First-floor fireplace has a fluted frieze and cornice but may be re-sited.
Built as part of the development of North Parade in the 1840s, its 3-storey height serving as an architectural end-stop to the streetscape.
