House, now offices with attached wall, piers and gates.
c1720-50, clearly later than No. 7 (qv). with later additions
and alterations with walls re-using earlier, probably C13
material; renewed gates. Reddish-brown brick, stuccoed to
front and to ground floor on left return, painted above, plain
tile roof hipped at left and tall left end reddish-brown stack
with renewed oversailing course; wall in coursed red and green
sandstone. 3 storeys on half-basement, 5 first-floor windows.
Plinth; first- and second-floor bands; moulded cornice, low
coped parapet. Ground and first floors have 6/6 sashes, those
to first floor have thick glazing bars, all in shallow
reveals. second floor has renewed casement windows. Attic has
3 box dormers with casement windows. Basement has blocked
openings, 2 with grilles. Central entrance: 4 roll-edged steps
to 6-raised-and-fielded-panel door with 3-pane overlight, hood
on corbels. Left return has 6/6 sash in plain reveals. Rear
has 6/6 sash and dentil eaves.
INTERIOR: noted as retaining original plasterwork and joinery
including original staircase.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: quadrant wall with chamfered copings
abuts left return at rear for approximately 8 metres, to pair
of gate piers with stepped ovolo-moulded angles and moulded
cornice with urn finials, double plank gates between and
further quadrant wall which abuts wall and railings to No.10
(qv).
All the listed buildings in College Yard (qqv) form a good
group and form part of the setting for the Cathedral (qv).
