2 shops with flats, now offices over. Dated 1881 with later
alterations including c1960 ground-floor shop front. Red brick in
Flemish bond with terracotta tiled panels, ashlar sills and
copings; concealed roof with rear and concealed stacks. Aesthetic
Movement style. 3 storeys, 3+1 first-floor windows, that to right
curved on plan. Windows are 6/1 horned sashes, those to angle are
blind with decorative tiles with floral motif, to first floor a
tablet bordered by pilasters surmounted by broken pediment and
shaped apron, inscribed 'COMPTON BUILDINGS'; that to second floor
has date to central band. All openings in plain reveals and with
sills, embellished flat arches have central tall tile with
sunflower motif. Crowning coped low parapet. Ground floor shop
front continues to right return: polished black granite shop
front with bronze fittings, has plate-glass windows between plain
pilasters and with apron, anted into entrance at right with
glazed door; window to right canted to angle. Right return has 6
first-floor windows with similar fenestration to all floors. To
far right, ground floor, further shop front with timber surround.
INTERIOR: ground floor altered so no evidence of original plan or
fittings remain. Otherwise not inspected.
Part of a good group of C18 and C19 listed buildings on the High
Street. Occupies a significant corner site at the junction of
Pump Street.
