Detached house. 1835-45 with later additions and alterations.
Painted stucco over brick, hipped slate roof. Brick stacks with
oversailing detail and pots to ridge and end walls. Cast-iron
balcony balustrade. Wrought-iron area grille. Principal
west-facing range with central entrance, further range to each
end extends to rear to form U-shaped plan. 2 storeys with
basement. Principal (west) Elevation: 7 (3:1:3) first-floor
windows. Stucco detailing includes simple plinth and eaves band,
pilasters to ends and to slightly recessed central bay; radial
fluted shell motif to tympana of ground-floor windows, Greek
Doric-style porch with fluted columns on simple pedestals.
Windows are all 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills except
that over porch which is a margin-glazed French window with
overlight; ornamental scrolled-heart and anthemion design
balustrade to porch roof forms balcony. French window and the
window to either side have external blind-boxes. 6-steps (4
roll-edged stone) to entrance which has 5-panel door, top pair
and centre panels are raised, fielded and moulded, bottom pair
are flush triple-beaded; fanlight has 2 radial glazing bars and
margin-glazing. 6 basement windows, 1 brick blocked otherwise 3/3
sashes to left, 4-pane casements with mullions to right, all in
plain reveals under cambered heads and with sills; ornamental
grille to far right area only. North Elevation: Painted brick
with simple plinth, eaves band continues from west elevation. 5
first-floor windows (3:2) in plain reveals with cambered heads,
right window brick-blocked apart from small 4-pane casement,
otherwise 6/6 sashes; only 2 windows retain projecting sills.
Ground-floor windows under semi-circular arched heads, plain
stucco tympana; all 6/6 in plain reveals with sills. South
Elevation: Painted, lined stucco with plinth and eaves band. 5
(2:3) first-floor windows in plain reveals with sills.
round-floor windows are 6/6 except centre which is 2-pane French
window with overlight; all under semi-circular arched heads with
plain tympana and reveals. Rear elevations are red brick;
fenestration includes 6/6 sashes, those to the ground-floor with
tympana as principle elevations; 10/6 staircase window with
radial pattern glazing to semi-circular head.
INTERIOR: is noted as retaining some original details including
panelled shutters.
HISTORICAL NOTE: 1886 O.S. Map shows a conservatory to the S.E.
corner of the house; some dwarf brick walling and an rea of
polychromatic ceramic floor tiles incorporating cast-iron grilles
remain on site. Nos. 1-15 (consecutive) and 17 and 18 Lansdowne
Crescent (qqv) form a good group of listed buildings comparing
well with other developments of this period in Worcester such as
Britannia Square, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace (qqv).
