House, part of terrace. c1830-50 with later additions and
alterations. Painted stucco over brick; hipped slate roof;
stacks to left hip-end and to ridge of right-return, both in
stucco with brick oversailing detail and pots. Timber porch.
PLAN: infilled L-shaped plan. Central hallway leads to central
staircase.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and cellar.
South (principal) elevation: 3 first-floor windows, 2
ground-floor windows, all 6/6 in plain reveals with sills.
Stucco scored to represent ashlar; simple plinth. Central
Doric-style porch with fluted columns and plain pilasters; 2
roll-edged steps to 3-panel door, upper panel margin-glazed,
bottom panels flush with raised half-round bead; radial
pattern fanlight. Set back to left-return is 2-storey wing
which links this house to the terrace; first-floor has
semi-circular headed 14/8 window, the upper sash having
Gothic-style tracery. Late C20 conservatory to ground-floor.
East elevation: 4 first-floor 6/6 sashes. Ground-floor has
central canted bay with margin-light 1/1 sashes; further 6/6
sash to left of bay; late C20 purpose-made 9-pane part-glazed
door to right.
Rear elevation has 2/4, 4/4, 8/8 sashes and a 14/8
semi-circular leaded sash as per front elevation; C20
part-glazed door and doorcase.
INTERIOR: retains some original features including panelled
doors, architraves with paterae to corners, some plaster
cornices and polychromatic ceramic tiles to hall floor. The
open-well staircase has slender square balusters with a hint
of Chinoiserie to their arrangement.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Nos 1-10 (consecutive) Rainbow Hill Terrace
(qqv) form a good group of listed buildings comparing well
with other developments of this period in Worcester such as
Britannia Square, Lansdowne Crescent, and Lark Hill (qqv).
