II
Commemorative monument, erected in November 1920 for remembrance of the victims of the First World War and subsequently, of the Second World War.
Designed by CFW Denning an architect from Bristol, with stone carving executed by Lewis Smallcorn of Bath. Fabricated of Portland stone, it is a largely plain, rectangular column standing at 23' high, with Doric entablature and a square frieze on the upper section of the column. Two commemorative bronze memorial plaques are fixed on to the north side of the monument along with a stone carved wreath on the upper section and lower down the column, the word, 'Pax' engraved in the stone. The memorial is situated in the town centre, at the head of the High Street, where the road splits into Station Road and Cannards Grave Road.
Summary of Importance:
This relatively simple First World War Memorial forms a simple memorial and has strong local ties with the town of Shepton Mallet.
