Description

LANDRAKE WITH ST ERNEY

1553/0/10005 Milestone on A38 near Tredinnick Lane
10-APR-08 junction

II
Granite milestone of c.1830, rectangular ashlar post. The incised lettering gives the distance to Saltash:
V
miles
To
S
There is an incised benchmark below the `S'.

HISTORY: The milestone is one of a series erected by the Saltash Turnpike Trust which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1761. This milestone probably dates from the 1830s when improvement work was carried out by the Trust to the westward extent of the route to Trerulehead.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: Milestones are of special interest as one of the few physical remains of national and local historic road use. They reflect the standardisation of roads and the introduction of turnpikes. This is one of a number of late C18 and early C19 granite milestones erected by the Saltash Turnpike Trust. The stone remains intact and in its original location. It also has group value with other listed mileposts on this route, and should therefore be included on the list.
