LITTLE WITLEY (South side)
Milestone on the A443

02-SEP-05

II

Milestone. Early C18. Round headed stone with an inscribed date, largely obscured although the number 7 is legible. There is an indent from a missing, probably later plate.

As a marker stone thought to date to 1734 and possibly associated with the nearby Witley Court, the milestone is an important marker serving as guidance for travellers as well as a means of assessing tolls and pricing journeys. Its continued use for this purpose is reflected by the later metal plate which was possible attached when a new series of milestones for the Worcester/Tenbury road was established.
