ILKLEY
710/0/10020 KEIGHLEY ROAD
29-JAN-09 Milestone
II
Milestone, 17th-18th C, stone obelisk c. 1 metre high, set by the road.
ELEVATIONS: squared front and sides, the front face bearing the inscription: To Keighley/ 4 M, with a crudely incised hand pointing left below, and To Ilkley, with a hand pointing right. There may be further words or marks below the hand but they are not legible (? R?).
HISTORY: The stone is marked as a bench mark (BM) and a Milestone (MS) on the 1894 edition OS map, with the mileages to Keighley (4 miles) and Ilkley (1 Mile) given, and as a milestone on the 1851 edition OS map. It may date from the period in the eighteenth century when the creation of turnpikes shifted the cost of road maintenance onto the road user through Act of Parliament, or possibly earlier as a guide marker to direct travellers over the moors.
