Milestone West of Doublebois (NGR SX19
57564908)

II
Milestone of c.1834. Triangular in plan with a top slightly sloping towards the front. The incised lettering is in Roman capitals with Arabic numerals. The inscription is to two dressed faces, the western face reads 'L 3 ½' and the eastern one `B 9'. The stone was originally painted white with the letters picked out in black, but there are almost no traces of paint remaining.

HISTORY: The Bodmin Turnpike Trust was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1769 to improve the roads into Bodmin. The Trust's original route towards Liskeard was somewhat circuitous and in November 1834 plans were published for a new more direct route through the Glynn Valley. A total of nine milestones were erected along this route and eight of these survive, of which this is one.
