War memorial. 1920. Designed by local architect Edwin Wooley.
MATERIALS: Portland stone.
PLAN: It has a square plan and is surrounded by stone bollards with chains between.
DESCRIPTION: The memorial consists of a decorated Latin cross head and an octagonal shaft, set upon a square plinth. It stands on a base of three steps. There are plaques attached to the plinth (all renewed in 2008), three of which commemorate and list the local men who lost their lives during the First World War. The inscriptions are in black painted lettering and read: THE / VILLAGERS TRIBUTE / TO THEIR GLORIOUS DEAD / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / AD 1914-1918 / "THE LORD HATH WROUGHT GREAT THINGS BY THEM THROUGH HIS GREAT POWER" / THESE MEN OF OURS, UNSELFISH, UNAFRAID / WENT TO THE WORLD WIDE FIGHT / FORGET NOT HOW THEY FOUGHT AND HOW WE PRAYED / FOR ENGLAND AND FOR RIGHT. Two further plaques list the men of Rode who lost their lives in the Great War and the Second World War respectively.
HISTORY: The great age of memorial building was in the aftermath of the First World War. The war memorial in the Rode was erected in 1920 to commemorate those men who died during the Great War. It was designed by Edwin Wooley, a local architect, and funding for the memorial, which cost £220, was raised by public subscription.

REASON FOR DESIGNATION: The war memorial in Rode is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* It is a modest but eloquent witness to the impact of tragic world events on this community
* Honouring the war dead of the parish, the memorial has strong historic and cultural significance
* It has group value with a number of listed buildings in the immediate vicinity
