(North side)

Summerhouse in
Garden of No.20
11/08/72
II

Miniature Islamic summerhouse. c1825. Probably designed by HE Goodridge and built by William Beckford who may have helped with design. Bath stone, square on plan, cornice, blocking course, semicircular dome. Trefoiled heads to door and window openings, stone grills to windows.
HISTORY: Beckford moved to No.20 (qv) soon after leaving Fonthill in 1822 and lived there until shortly before his death in 1844. Goodridge was designing Lansdown Tower (qv) for him at this time. The structure is of considerable interest but has undergone some reconstruction.
