Railings and steps. Early C19. Coursed limestone rubble with ashlar coping, and wrought iron. They form the retaining wall at east end of South Parade outside No.14.
HISTORY: This street was laid out by John Wood the Elder, the building plots being let between 1743 and 1749, but the east end was completed later. The present wall and steps are even later, however: Thomas Hearne's `A View of Bath from Spring Gardens with Pulteney Bridge' (1790, engraved by Byrne and Schuman 1792) shows the wall set further back with flight of steps coming directly away from, rather than parallel with, the face of wall as now. Nonetheless, in spite of such alterations, the wall and steps are of considerable interest as the remnants of the former ferry that served Spring Gardens and Widcombe, a picturesque departure point for pleasure trips.
