Terrace house. Completed 1790 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Palmer, built by Charles Viner.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, painted. Welsh slate parapeted mansard roof. House at junction of Marlborough Street and St James's Square of triangular plan completely enclosed to sides and rear, staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, two-window front. First floor has two six/six horned sashes in splayed reveals with continuous wrought iron balconette. Second floor has two similar windows in plain reveals with continuous stone sill. Ground floor has to left one eight/eight horned sash in splayed reveal with stone sill, to right six-panel door with beaded and fielded panels, single-pane overlight and pennant step, in moulded architrave with flat surround with moulded cornice on console brackets, one step to pennant paved crossover with C19 cast iron footscraper. Basement has one six/six sash in plain reveal with stone sill, C20 plank door and window in ashlar infilling under crossover, no area steps. Triple dormer with glazing bar casements. Band course over ground floor, sill band to first floor, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet continuous with No.7 Marlborough Street (qv).
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with shaped and cast arrow heads on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790. Marlborough Street forms one the four diagonal approaches to St James's Square. Underlease to Charles Viner 16 November 1790 for 96 years from 24 June 1790, for 'two pieces of ground and three messuages thereon' (ie. Nos 6, 7 and 8 Marlborough Street) indicates use by builder of corner site to build extra house (cf. Nos 1, 2 and 2A Marlborough Street, No.27 Rivers Street qv).
