Description

HENRIETTA VILLAS
656-1/0/0 (North West side)

Nos.1 AND 2 (Formerly Listed as: HENRIETTA ROAD Nos 1 and 2 Henrietta Villas)
05/08/75

GV II

Pair of semi-detached houses. c1840 with late C19 alterations.
MATRIALS: Limestone ashlar, wide eaved shallow pitched hipped slate roof with central ridge stack and wide eaves band.
PLAN: double depth plan with single storey rear range.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys and semi-basement, pair symmetrical three-window range with blind windows to party wall. Plate glass sash windows with geometrical patterns to cast iron balconettes, moulded architraves and returned sill band to first floor, cornice to central first floor blind window, cornices on consoles and console-bracketed sills to ground floor windows, plinth. First floor sill band follows contours of lower first floor sills to outer windows but may be intentional C19 stylistic liberty. Steps up to late C19 four panel door in right return.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
HISTORY: The road lies along the route of the old footpath connecting Bath and Bathwick. Originally this area was earmarked for a major development called Frances Square (marked on Chantry¿s plan of 1793, and on Donne¿s plan of 1810). After a substantial delay this suburban development, greatly reduced in density, was proceeded with in a characteristic Late Georgian manner. The villas are shown on Cotterell¿s 1851 plan of Bath, and are recorded as being "newly erected" in the Bath Guide for 1853.
