Lychgate 20m north of the Church of St Peter on the Green
GV II
Lychgate. Dated 1906. Perpendicular style. Open work timber frame structure on a low plinth wall of flint and dressed stone ashlar. Cruciform tiled roof with steeply pitched gables to north (towards road), south, east and west. Two bays. Arched tie beams to north and south elevations support a decorative queen post arcade with three arched infill panels below collar. Grid-like framing to east and west elevations with horizontal collar, tie beam and lower member with two arched infill panels below collar. Plain bargeboards to the four gables. Wooden double gates to the north elevation.
An inscription on the collar facing The Green reads, '1906', and on the tie beam below, 'This is Gods Acre'. Within the lychgate, on the inside of the west gable, is a metal plaque with an inscription which reads, 'In memory of two friends of Monkton near Dublin, Sydney, new South Wales, Xmas Day 1888'.
A well executed, unaltered, timber frame Edwardian lychgate, which has group value with the Grade II church and a number of other churchyard monuments.
