Description


MATERIALS: carved from granite, resting on a pebble and concrete foundation.

DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands in the churchyard of the church of St Nicholas. It is immediately north-west of the Grade I listed medieval church and south-east of the Grade II* listed late C16 Manor House. The memorial comprises an ashlar granite cross with Celtic head, enriched by interlace and knotwork carved in relief, upon on a tapering shaft c1.5m high that rises from a trapezoidal granite plinth. The shaft is inscribed TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF/ MEN OF ABBOTSBURY/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ DURING THE WAR/ 1914-1919. The top of the plinth has a hollow chamfer where it meets the shaft. There are 13 names inscribed on the front of the plinth, which has a tooled outer edge and rests on a square granite base with a pebble and concrete foundation.

History


The aftermath of the First World War saw a huge wave of public commemoration with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. One such memorial was erected in circa 1920 to commemorate the men of Abbotsbury who died during the conflict.

Reasons for Listing


Abbotsbury war memorial, which stands in the churchyard of St Nicholas’s Church, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: a well-crafted memorial formed of a Celtic cross enriched by carved interlace and knotwork, set on an ashlar shaft rising from a moulded plinth;
* Group value: with the Grade I listed church of St Nicholas and the Grade II* listed Manor House.
