History

The war memorial was unveiled in 1921 and dedicated by the Bishop of Bath and Wells on 29 March 1921. It was manufactured by Messrs. F Blackler & Son of Clutton, and cost £150, raised by public subscription. There are 19 names of parishioners, arranged by rank, who died during the First World War. 18 further names were added to commemorate those who died during the Second World War. In 2015 a further name was added to the memorial when a local historian noted that the name of a soldier who had died in the Second World War was missing.

Reasons for Listing

Chilcompton War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: as a modest yet elegant cross which stands on an elevated position.
