Description

War memorial erected in 1922. Further plaque added after Second World War.

MATERIALS: constructed from stone.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial is prominently situated in the centre of Oakhill and takes the form of a stylised Celtic cross on an octagonal tapered shaft mounted upon an octagonal stepped plinth with moulded caps. The front (south-east) face of the plinth is inscribed : IN/ MEMORIAM/ 1914-1919; the rear face carries a quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson: UNDER THE WIDE AND/ STARRY SKY/ DIG ME A GRAVE AND/ LET ME DIE/ GLAD DID I LIVE AND/ GLADLY DIE/ AND I LAY ME DOWN/ WITH A WILL; and the other faces carry the names of the fallen. The plinth rests on a two-stepped base of stone rubble which is also octagonal; the upper step is inscribed: 1939-1945. There are also two stone flower holders on the lower step.

The memorial stands within a semi-circular paved area, surrounded by a low curved wall of stone rubble.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was erected in Oakhill in 1922 to commemorate the fallen from both Oakhill and Ashwick. It replaced an earlier, portable wooden memorial, which was previously brought out for Remembrance services. Following the Second World War a further inscription was added to commemorate the six men who lost their lives during the conflict.

Reasons for Listing

Oakhill and Ashwick War Memorial, which is situated in the centre of the village, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: a well-executed memorial in the form of a Celtic cross.
