First World War memorial, erected c1920.

MATERIALS: carved from local limestone.

DESCRIPTION: the war memorial, which stands on an octagonal platform, comprises a Latin cross with an octagonal shaft and base, surmounted on a two-stage octagonal pedestal. The east face of the upper section of the pedestal, the dado, has a recessed rectangular panel with the inscription ‘IN REMEMBRANCE’ carved in relief. To either side, on the south-east and north-east face of the dado, is a smaller recessed panel with the year ‘1914’ and ‘1918’, also carved in relief.

History

The great age of memorial building was in the aftermath of the First World War with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. It is not known when North Perrott War Memorial was erected and commemorated, but it was likely to be during the 1920s.

Reasons for Listing

North Perrott War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the First World War;
* Degree of survival: unusually the memorial has not been adapted for Second World War commemoration, and thus retains its original design intent;
* Architectural interest: an accomplished and well-realised design;
* Group value: with the base of the former village cross (Grade II) and the Manor Arms Inn (Grade II).
