The inscriptions on the memorial are leaded. The south face of the plinth and steps reads: ROLL OF HONOUR / A.M.D.G. / IN LASTING MEMORY OF THOSE BRAVE MEN / FROM THIS PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR / LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / (NAMES).

The east face reads: AND IN MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE WAR 1939 – 1945 / (NAMES).

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Burton Fleming in circa 1920 as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community, who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.  It commemorates four local servicemen who died during the First World War.  A further inscription was added to the memorial, in 1956, to commemorate four servicemen who died during the Second World War.

In 2014 work was undertaken to improve the legibility of the inscriptions, with funding from War Memorials Trust.

Reasons for Listing
