DESCRIPTION: the memorial is carved from Cornish granite and consists of a Celtic cross on a square shaft mounted on a three-stepped octagonal base. At the centre of the cross-head is a carved representation of the Crucifixion. At the base of the shaft is a relief carving of a crown and a laurel wreath, the emblem of victory, and beneath this on the upper step is the inscription: 1914 GREAT WAR 1919. The inscription to the three front (north) faces of the middle step reads: THEY WHOM THIS CROSS COMMEMORATES ARE NUMBERED AMONG THOSE WHO AT THE / CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM, ENDURED HARDNESS / FACED DANGER, AND FINALLY PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT OF MEN, BY / THE PATH OF DUTY AND SELF SACRIFICE, GIVING UP THEIR / OWN LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM. LET THOSE WHO COME / AFTER SEE TO IT THAT THEY BE NOT FORGOTTEN.

On 9 June 1920 the war memorial in the churchyard of St Andrew’s Church was unveiled and dedicated by Colonel Braithwaite and the Bishop of Taunton respectively, as part of the great wave of commemoration of the sacrifice made by the Fallen from communities across the country. It commemorates the 55 men from the parish of Wiveliscombe who lost their lives during the First World War. Two stone memorial tablets inscribed with the names, ranks and regiments of the Fallen were also erected within the church at the same time.
The war memorial in the churchyard of St Andrew’s Church is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Design interest: it is an accomplished and well-proportioned memorial of Cornish granite;
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group value: with the Grade II* listed Church of St Andrew which forms a backdrop to the war memorial.
