The memorial appears to have been erected after the Second World War, as part of the commemoration of the sacrifice made by the fallen from communities across the country. It was set up in a prominent position adjacent to the lych gate of the village church. The memorial commemorates those men from the village who lost their lives or who served in both world wars. Those who died in the First World War had previously been commemorated by the addition of new figures in the rood within the church, designed by Sir Ninian Comper, in the 1920s.
The war memorial in West Bagborough is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a sombre but elegant memorial slab, with a carved laurel wreath.
