Summary


A monolithic sandstone signpost at a road junction in the centre of the village of Morville, of C18 or C19 date.

Description


A signpost at a road junction in the centre of the village of Morville, of C18 or C19 date.

MATERIALS & PLAN: a red sandstone, monolithic post, square on plan.

The post has a square base with broach stops which transition to a chamfered shaft. This rises to a square head which has rectangular recesses at either side to receive sign boards (now lost). Above this is a pointed cap, which was originally more elaborate with a decorative finial.

History


The signpost is recorded on the Ordnance Survey map published in 1884. It appears to date from the late C18 or early C19.

Reasons for Listing


The signpost at Morville road junction, Shropshire is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

Architectural interest

* As a prominent feature at the juncture at the centre of the village;

* Its setting in a Conservation Area.

* A stone signpost which predates 1884.
