DESCRIPTION
The memorial is situated in a prominent location within the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew. It is carved from Cornish granite and comprises a rough-hewn, wheel-head cross with a relief carving of the Sword of Sacrifice on the north face of the cross-head and shaft. It is set upon a rough-hewn, square-sectioned plinth which stands upon a single-stepped square base. The front face of the plinth is inscribed in leaded lettering:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN SACRED MEMORY OF/ (NAMES)/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised at Tur Langton as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the six local men who died during the conflict. The memorial was unveiled on Sunday 24 October 1920 by Mrs W Hayr and was dedicated by the Rector, the Reverend TH Ross.
