MATERIALS: constructed of stone.
DESCRIPTION: comprising a small Latin cross on a block that bears a relief-carved shield. The block stands on a square plinth with rounded corners. The plinth has buttresses to each side with moulded caps and dressed quoins. The plinth bears the inscriptions in incised lettering that reads: (front) IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ & SOME NEIGHBOURS WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAME)// (reverse) (NAMES).
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Kirstead after 1920 as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by 17 local servicemen who fell in the First World War. The memorial was later altered to recognise the serviceman of this parish who fell in the Second World War.
