J M Dick Peddie, 1912. 2-storey and attic Arts and
Crafts house on falling ground with basement to E bays
and 2-storey motorhouse cottage adjoining. Random
Rattlebag rubble and droved ashlar dressings.
S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: gabled, asymmetrical with
irregularly spaced recessed bays at centre;
pentice-roofed porch to left of centre entered from E
side. Variety of window sizes diminutive in attic. Stair
window right of centre with ashlar apron and window
below. Outer bays gabled and advanced, intercepting
recessed bay at right.
N (GARDEN) ELEVATION: 5-bay. Full-height 4-light canted
bays at centre and to outer right with parapets breaking
eaves. Single windows to ground and 1st floor of
remaining bays. Projecting terraced area with coped
rubble parapet adjoining. Outer right bays with garden
house below on fall of ground to E.
W ELEVATION: large 4-storey gable; asymmetrical windows
and stack in left gable sweep. Single outer right bay.
E ELEVATION: large gable with irregular openings and
basement door; raised, battered stack to left, and blank
outer bay with cottage adjoining basement at left.
COTTAGE: piend-roofed cottage with gabled bays at centre
to E and W elevations. Doorway at centre of E elevation,
flanked to left by garage doors, and to right by
pentice-roofed outbuilding. 3 and 4-lights under eaves to
S and N gables respectively, with bipartites below.
8, 12-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows.
Flat-roofed 2 and 3-light dormers (swept slated dormers
to S). Coped stacks. Distinctive, large Caithness slates
to roofs. Swept eaves.
GATEWAY, GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: round arched
ashlar gateway with chamfered surround and gablet
coping. Rubble drum gatepiers with dome caps and
quadrant walls. Random rubble, rubble coped boundary
walls.
Subdivided. Conformity to sloping site and relieving arches
give distinctive Arts and Crafts references. House
commissioned for Hon Percy M Thesiger. Forms centre of a
group of 3 Arts and Crafts houses in similar materials
displaying virtuosity of design.
