Circa 1830, large 2-storey courtyard steading with former
carriage houses and stables. 2-storeys with principal S
facing 15-bay front. All coursed rubble with tooled ashlar
margins and dressings. Slightly advanced centre and outer
bays, each with crenellated wallhead returning on to side
elevations. Tall centre round-headed archway to inner court
under 2-storey octagonal tower with (now empty) clockface in
upper part of centre facet. Blocked pointed-headed windows in
both storeys of 3 front facets, and also to rear. Round-
headed windows in both storeys of 3 front facets, and also to
rear. Round-headed carriage entrances in outer bays, now
blocked as multi-pane windows; symmetrically spaced doors
and fenestration between outer bays and centre arched
entrance, with 4-pane glazing. Pair ridge stacks and single
wallhead stacks to E and W return gables; piended slate roofs
to front portion, with gilded ball finials at ridge angles.
Some alteration to fenestration in side and rear elevations,
partly for enlargement and improvement of dwellings, and for
alteration to steading; wallhead raised and pitch of roof
altered and covered with corrugated asbestos.
Cantray House destroyed by fire in 1927; replaced by later
house on slightly different site.
