Description

Circa 1772. Large classical mansion, 2 storeys and attic over
raised basement 5 bays with centre door; 2 storey 3 bay
flanking wings at ground level, having different floor levels
internally from main block. Ashlar. Main (south) elevation;
slightly advanced, quoined centre bay with classical
pedimented doorway and sidelights approached by broad flight
of steps oversailing smooth rusticated basement. Porch
flanked by round headed windows. Centre Venetian window 1st
floor with modillioned pediment and bull's eye above.
Balustraded parapet, paired flanking chimneys, piended roof
and 3 piended dormers.
Flanking wings with 3 tall segmental headed blind arches at
ground floor with 3 small blind windows (one with 4 light
casement) above; band course, plain parapet (balustraded to
north) and hipped roof. Corresponding facade to north having
bowed projecting centre bay full height. Long corniced
doorway with glazed door centre ground floor approached by
flight of steps.
Modillioned eaves cornice; 2 band courses; smooth rusticated
quoins; slate roof.
Interior contains some fine mantel pieces, good ceilings and
staircases.

Statement of Interest

Cromarty House built on site of Cromarty Castle, demolished

1772, by George Ross who bought the estate in 1765 from the

Urquharts.
