and white-washed, broad-eaved low pitched slated roof.
S.E. front originally 3-window bow with steps, 1-window
on W, 2-window on E. (query if an older house reconstructed);
extended by 2-windows on W. Rodger Architects c.1956. N.W.
front asymmetrical with jerkin-head gable and later porch.
Unusual late classic detail, no margins, consoled cornices
and cills only. Simple distinctive interior work, one good
marble chimney-piece.

Statement of Interest

Built for Admiral (then Captain) Maitland who received

Napoleon's surrender on the Bellerophon. His architect

may have been James Mylne as he was preses of the meeting

of heritors at which Mylne was appointed to design the

parish kirk. An earlier house stood on the same site and

may be partly incorporated in the present house. The S.

bow and 2 E. pays are said to be older than the W. part

and the original entrance was at the bow. (Information

from Dr D.R. Maitland).
