1723 for John Elphinstone. Altered 1889 Matthews &
Mackenzie (as Nurses' Home) and again 1934 G. Bennet
Mitchell with addition of 2-storey and attic wing to rear.
Original house 3-storey 5-window rectangle, harled with
chamfered openings, skewputts, big chimneys with deep
moulded copes at gables. Doorpiece, glazing, window cills
and dormers modern. Interior much altered and renewed,
central staircase to rear, semi-circular plan with
demi-lune well, stone to 1st floor wood above, lighted
by single large window with chamfer.
Much spoiled but of interest because of its date. The
new house of Glack was built 1876 for J. Mackenzie to
designs by James Matthews, heavy-handed baronial, some good
Elizabethan ceilings within, one good late 18th century
chimneypiece from old house. Indifferently extended
Matthew and Mackenzie as House of Daviot asylum 1889 and
alterations and additions since.
