Description

Built circa 1870. 2-storey, large villa, asymmetrical

elevations with advanced gables. Bull-faced red ashlar

with polished dressings, strings, corbelling, roll-mouldings

and margins. Variety of window openings, round, segmental

or square-headed, singly or grouped, some canted or in square projections. Octagonal turret full-height or corbelled at

or near outer angles, each with corbel table at eaves and

facetted slate roof with flat leaded cap. North-facing gable

has gabled porch in east re-entrant angle, west re-entrant

turret entrance with cast-iron guards in front of 1st floor

round-arched windows. Twin gables of lower service range

faces east. Bracketted eaves; gables with simple barge-boards

and framing; corniced stacks; slate roofs.

Square red ashlar gatepiers linked by low quadrant walls.

Wrought iron gates and railings.

Statement of Interest

Built for Capt Anderson of the "Great Eastern" who laid out

the garden with exotic plants, and architectural ornaments.

There are a number of wells, caves, statues, and ornaments

which fall within the curtilage.
