Description

18th century. 2-storey ochre washed harl with margins,
windows grouped 1-1-1/1/1-1/1 S. front. Considerably
renovated internally. Of the additions made by J. Gillespie
Graham probably c. 1835 the N. wing remains, 2-storey
crowstepped with bay at N. gable and gothic 1st floor E.
windows with Elizabethan gablets above (contains fine
drawing (?) room with rich arched and ribbed ceiling) and
circular conical roofed N.W. tower remain; E. part
(probably greater part of Gillespie Graham's addition)
demolished before 1901.

Statement of Interest

James Gillespie married Miss Graham of Orchill c. 1815

and upon her succession assumed the additional surname of

Graham. The design of the ceiling is related to those at

Taymouth (1838-42). The old house was replaced by a very

ambitious baronial house by Heiton (1868-9) one of his

best designs, burnt World War I and reinstated.
