Description

Earlier 17th century. Square plan sundial with carved strapwork to baluster shaft on square base; waisted neck surmounted by corniced capital, dished to centre; gnomon missing.

Statement of Interest

A Group with Baberton House (see separate listing). The sundial, which is possibly contemporary with Baberton House, was originally part of extensive pleasure grounds which probably emerged in the early 17th century during the period of stability and affluence which followed the Reformation. In 1847 they were bisected by the Caledonian Railway. Baberton Golf Course occupies much of the grounds to the SE, but the sundial, walled garden (see separate listing) and bothy (see separate listing) still survive.
