Opened 1897, engineer to Highland Railway Murdoch Paterson.
Island platform station approached by long ramped roadway.
Long, single storey timber framed station buildings partly
built on pier. 1 course of stones forms base for timber
framing, walls horizontally boarded; 11 main bays with
narrower bays at either end; cast-iron fluted pilasters with
stylised acanthus capitals mark each bay and support brackets
and canopy. Windows mainly bipartite but some tripartite, 2
projecting V-plan windows. Vertical match-board tongue and
grooved interiors. Brick stacks, piended slate roof.
The size of the station and all the accommodation available
reflects the importance of this pierhead Station.
